Top 5 Celebrity Watch Collectors
Top 5 Celebrity Watch Collectors

We all know celebrities like to splash the cash, and their watch collections are no exception. From those celebs you might expect to the more obscure characters who enjoy a timepiece or two, these are the top celebrity watch collectors.

John Mayer

John Mayer, an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer, is also an avid watch collector and connoisseur. And his knowledge can be traced back to his activities – he has been on the jury at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. He was also a contributor on Hodinkee, one of the best resources for modern and vintage wristwatches.
He has a vast collection of watches, including the Patek Philippe 5396G, made in collaboration with Tiffany & Co., to celebrate the five year anniversary of the boutique located on the premises of the 5th Avenue New York City store since 2008. Despite its specific relation to a fixed location of the Tiffany & Co. store, the watch only mentions Tiffany & Co. as a whole – making this watch a more sought-after item worldwide.
Last year, the then-new Rolex Daytona was announced at Baselworld 2016 – and one of the first people to own it was none-other than John Mayer. With an in-depth review of the watch on Hodinkee, alongside Ben Clymer, this watch is definitely a flagship in the watch enthusiast's collection.

Jay Z

Jay Z, entrepreneur, rapper, husband of Beyoncé, watch collector. A fan of Audemars Piguet, he collaborated with the luxury brand to mark 10 years of activity in the music industry – and so the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore was born. A limited-edition watch, it features a diamond encrusted 10 on the dial and the rapper’s signature on the back.
Eight years later, a collaboration with Hublot emerged – called Shawn Carter by Hublot Classic Fusion (Jay Z’s real name). Coming in either an all-black watch or a gold dial (not the usual rose gold!) with a black strap, and a cut-out logo in the middle, revealing some of the movement, this watch is sure to turn heads.

Leonardo DiCaprio

The Oscar-winning (finally!) Leonardo diCaprio is well-known in the watch collector’s circle. Rolex, Tag Heuer, Breitling and Raymond Weil, Leonardo was seen wearing different impressive timepieces.
During the UK premiere of The Wolf of Wall Street, Leonardo DiCaprio wore the Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Automatic Chronograph watch – and it was a delight to watch him on the red carpet. The watch has a classic look, with a white dial and a black leather strap, and rose gold details on the dial, making it a must-have in any watch fan’s collection.
As most celebrities, Leonardo DiCaprio has collaborated with TAG Heuer to release a limited edition Link Calibre 16 chronograph watch. The blue dial rarely goes out of style, although it is on the small side, at 40mm in diameter. The unusually, more rarely seen smoked caseback features the award-winning actor’s signature, adding a nice touch.

Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony is a professional basketball player for the New York Knicks, in the NBA. He has an amazing collection, probably one of the most impressive ones out there, with watches from Audemars Piguet, Rolex, Hublot, IWC, and Patek Philippe. Having made a video for Haute Time Magazine's "Celebrity Watch Collector" series, we now know that his favourite watch is the IWC Portuguese Tourbillon Mystère Squelette watch from his impressive and ever-growing collection. It is a limited edition watch, with only 50 made in the world.

Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton, guitar legend, has had many watches come and go through his slowhand. Best known in the watch world for his Patek Philippe and Rolex collections, he’s owned quite a few rare timepieces. The most revered in his collection was the Platinum Patek Philippe 2499 – who sold in 2012 for a whopping £2.3 million – and for good reason. Usually coming in yellow gold – and very rarely in rose gold – this platinum version is one of just two from the same range. In total, throughout the years, it is believed that only 25 exist in this white metal (i.e. platinum), most of them being in the hands of the manufacturers themselves.
